Moving Checklist
Here are some steps to help you plan your move.
Before the Moving Day
1. Get Organized
Get folder to hold all the paperwork. Print this checklist, and file it in the folder.
2. Prepare for Address Change
Start jotting down the names of the mailings you receive that will need to know your change of address. Also note the agencies that you will need to contact:
- Newspapers
- Magazines
- DMV
- Banks
- Doctors/Dentists
- Schools
- Credit Cards
The US Post Office provides change of address forms that set up mail forwarding. Available as kits or online at: https://moversguide.usps.com/?referral=USPS
3. Set a Moving Date
Moving Date: ______________________________
Contact a moving company or reserve a moving truck (allow 2-4 weeks notice in the summer). Friends and neighbors may also be willing to lend a hand or a vehicle.
4. Remember the Utilities
Call or email the Leasing Office to let us know what day you are moving in (or out). This will allow us to make sure the utilities we are in charge of will be connected on time. We currently take care of water, sewer,
trash and recycle.
Call the service providers of the following utilities directly:
- Electricity
- Telephone
- Cable TV / Cable Internet
5. Sign the Lease
Doing this ahead of time will make moving much smoother.
6. Apply for Renter’s Insurance
The Leasing Office has information about this.
7. Get Supplies, such as…
- Bubble wrap
- Sharpie Markers
- Boxes
- Scissors
- Tape
- Newspaper
- Ziplock Bags
7. Start Packing!
- Pack overnight essentials first
- Pack the boxes
- Label the boxes as you go
- Keep a log of box names, the room each should be put in, main items inside (this makes it much easier for people to help you later!)
On Moving Day
1. Confirm the scheduled moving time with your movers and with the Leasing Office.
2. Prepare some snacks and drinks ahead of time.
3. Assign someone to check off boxes as they are delivered.
4. Order pizza. Take some time to settle in and enjoy your new place!
